Free Loaner Yukata or Summer Kimono at the Osu Summer Festival
(Saturday, August 4)
August 4 -- enjoy the Osu Summer Festival in a traditional yukata!
The 68th annual Osu Summer Festival is taking place the weekend of
August 4 and 5 this year. To make this year's festival extra-special,
the organizers will be making free yukata -- light summer kimonos --
available for free loan on August 4 to anyone who wants to wear one to
enjoy the festival in traditional style.
When: from 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 4
Where: the Hommachi-dori entrance to the Higashi Niomon arcade street
(100 meters east of Cesari Pizza and Istanbul Cafe, near Tops Popcorn on
the corner)
Cost: free
The organizers will be providing the yukata, obi (sash), footgear, and
changing rooms for men and women, with professional kimono instructors
also on hand to help with putting everything on. There's no charge, but
reservation is required (to ensure the right number of yukata are on
hand). Contact Stephen Carter at scarter@hticn.com or 052-231-1978, in
English or Japanese.
The festival itself promises to be busy fun, with Saturday's events
including performances by taiko drummers and other musical acts on
several stages around the Osu arcade, awa-odori and samba parades,
demonstrations by champion muay thai fighters and other martial artists,
and bon-odori dancing on the Osu Kannon temple grounds in the evening.
