Chochin

Chochin is a traditional Japanese-style lantern.
The shade is made of Japanese paper and bamboo hoops.
A candle is set inside.

Chochin was used as a lantern and gate lamp during the Edo period,
however now it is used for decoration for festivals and fairs.
Bars and pubs also use it as a sign or decoration.

At Gion festival Chochin can be collapsed flat when not in use.
