DRIVER'S LICENSE
If you want to drive a car in Japan
you must have one of these
1) Japanese driver's license
2) International Driver's license ground on Geneva Agreement
3) Driver's license from a county which doesn't issue an international
driver's license
but which keeps the same level driver's license system
( Now Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and Taiwan only )
In this case a translation in Japanese should be attached
by some specific office(JAF, Consular office, etc.)
which is prescribed by government ordinance. click
Permitted Driving Period
1) Japanese driver's license : Untill the expiration date
2) International driver's license or foreign driver's license : 1 year
after
landing in Japan or the expiration date of the license concerned, whichever
is shorter.
( If you are registered as a foreign resident, leave Japan with
re-entry permit, and return to Japan within 3 months, the date of your
re-entry does not
count as the first day of this period )

If you want to convert your driver's license to Japanese one,
you must fill the requirements as follows
| * After getting foreign driver's license, stay that country for over 3
months in all |
| * The foreign driver's license be should be effectivel in that country when you apply |
| * Pass the confirmation test of knowledge and technique |
- you must apply for and take the test yourself
- If you had had Japanese driver's license before the confirmation test
might be skipped
- can not convert to a different type of driver's license ( ex.. car =>
bus or truck)
Documents to be prepared

3,000 yen / translation fee by JAF
confirmation and issuing of the driver's license
| * You must pass the aptitude test and confirmation test of knowledge and technique |
| * The date for the confirmation test of technique will be specified after the confirmation test of knowledge has been passed |
| * If you pass the confirmation test of technique, your driver's license
will be issued on that day. |
