Hagoita

In the Edo period, hagoita also became a decorative object with a Oshi-e/picked cloth work. Hagoita which used in a game has no decoration but just a painting

Hagoita is a paddle in a game of Hanetsuki (or Oibane) that played by girls at the beginning of the new year.
People has been believed that playing hanetsuki protect them against evils and mosquitos through the year.
(The shuttlecock was made an image of dragonfly. Dragonflies eat mosquitos => bad luck or evils)
Hanetsuki is played like badminton.
The players take turns at hitting a shuttlecock and one who allows it
to fall to the ground is the loser.
