Zoo & Botanical Gardens

15-20 minute walk from Nagoya Univ., 1-2 minute walk
from Higashiyama-koen subway station.
In the zoo they keep koala bears from the sister city Sydney in Australia
and 'kinshiko' monkeys.
These monkeys resemble Xuan Zang(Monkey King) of the book
"Journey to the West(Monkey King)" written by Wo Chieng-en.

There are 16,800 animals of about 600 species.
In the botanical gardens, there are about 5,500 species of plants.
In addition, they also have a big green house, a house with a steep rafter roof
which was moved from Shirakawa, a village in Gifu Pref.,
a trail named Man'yo Trail *
and a trail of medicinal herbs. You may enjoy the place year-round.

*Man'yo means Man'yoshuu. Man'yoshuu is the oldest
anthology of 31-syllable Japanese poems.
Along the trail you will see plants which the poets put in the poems.

Sky Tower

14-15 minute walk from the main gate of the Higashiyama Park
or Higashiyama-koen
subway station on the Higashiyama line.
It's located in a corner of the Higashiyama Park.
Built and open in July 1989
for the 100th anniversary of city organization of Nagoya .
It's 134m high on top of the hill 80 meters above sea level.
The landscape from the observation platform is fantastic.
You can see the Suzuka mountains,
Mt. Ontake Mt. Ena, the Central Japan Alps, Nagoya Dome,
Nagoya Port Triton Bridge, in addition to many other sight.
110 meters above sea level,
there is a reataurant 'Sky Retaurant'
The night view from there is wonderful.
