(Ja means a snake or dragon, and ike means a pond)

Jaike Shrine and Jaike

There is a pond called "Jaike" in the shrine precincts.
The word said that a huge snake was living in the pond.
Then the pond was named "Jaike"and a shrine was named "Jaike Jinja".

There is a interesting story.
In the Warring State Period, Oda Nobunaga heard a tale that a village people here saw a huge snake or dragon in this pond.
He ordered the followers and village people to draw water from Jaike pond to find it out.
Nobunaga also tried to find it, however couldn't find and gave up. after 10 days.
This episode shows symbolically how he had done everything drastically.
Anyway, this is the reason why people call this pond Jaike (Ja means a snake and ike means a pond)
