Juni-hitoe is a greatly elegant robe and was worn by women of the upper
classes (court ladies and noble women)
as the formal dress in the Heian Period (794-1192).
It was the result of Japanese adaptation of clothing
introduced into the court from China in the Nara Period (710-784) and became
established late in the Heian Period..
