Temizuya is a font of shrine to purify visitors by rinsing their hands and mouth by themselves.
According to the formal way, when we enter shrines we have to purify ourselves
by performining cold water ablutions at the river or sea (like the photo below).
Some people or in some festivals, they still keep doing this.
Rinsing at the temizuya is the its simplified style.



Order Photo The order of purification at the temizuya
1 Hold a dipper in your right hand and pour water over your left hand.
2 Shift the dipper from right to your left hand and pour water over your right hand.
3 Shift the dipper to your right hand again, and scoop water.
4 Get some water by your left hand and rinse out your mouth. (Don't drink !)
5 Scoop water and wash your left hand again as saving some water in a dipper.
6 Stand the dipper and rinse its handle with dropping water.
7 Retuen the dipper in place.
