Samboh / 三方

Samboh is a small square wooden tray-stand with three halls made of unpainted Japanese cypress wood.
Unpainting plane wood means purity and cleanness. So, this is usually used for placing offerings to gods in Shinto Shrine.
In temple they often use samboh with lacquered wood.

We ordinaly people also use it to place kagamimochi or rice cakes
on new year days (January 1 to January 10)
<We eat kagamimochi on January 11th , an event called Kagami-biraki >
