Shochu-Mimai/Summer Greeting
暑中見舞い

Send between July 7th (Shohsho 小暑) and August 7th (one day before Risshu 立秋/the beginning of autumn in the old lunar calendar)



In Japan, there is a polite custom of sending summer greeting cards to one's friends,
former teachers, etc. during the hottest part of the summer.
People easily catch a summer cold (Natsu-kaze 夏風邪) or fall ill in this season,
so we inquire their health condition and wish their good health.

Order ex.
1 Seasonal greetings 暑中お見舞い申し上げます / 暑中お伺い申し上げます
2 Inquire one's health condition or safety
in the hot weather
ex. きびしい暑さが続いておりますが 皆様お変わりなくお過ごしのことと存じます。
How are you doing in this hot weather?
3 Your latest news ex. おかげさまで私も元気に暮らしております
I am doing great.
4 Pray for peace ex.まだまだ暑さも続きます折 なにとぞご自愛の上お過ごしください。

If you receive a Shochu-mimai card before you send, please send thank you lcard ASAP.


Japan Post sells Shochu-mimai card which called "Kamo-Mail"
from June 1st to around August 26 each year.
You can also buy cool cards at convinience stores, supermarkets, stationers.

Zansho-Mimai/Late-Summer Greeting
残暑見舞い

If you forgot to send a shochu-mimai card during the specific period,
please send a zansho-mimai card or greetings during the lingering heat.
Mail after August 8th 2011(Risshu立秋/the beginning of autumn).
(until the end of August)
