In an age without electricity or gas, darkness was truly pitch black. Precisely because of that, light shone all the more beautifully, coloring each moment of daily life. People communicated with one another by sensing presence and fragrance in the soft glow of candlelight or moonlight. They were captivated by fireworks blooming across the night sky, and believed that the vivid, flickering flames of fire held the power to ward off evil—guiding their way through the dark. The quiet stillness of night also offered precious time for introspection, cultivating the aesthetic sensibilities that came to define Edo culture. This exhibition explores the essence of light that pierced the darkness of Edo—moon and stars shining at night, blazing torches and bonfires, the mysterious flicker of foxfire, and the shimmering brilliance of mica printing—through the works of Utagawa Hiroshige. Also featured are pieces by Kobayashi Kiyochika, who captured the changing illumination of the Meiji era as modernization transformed daily life. Darkness calls forth light, and light, in turn, renders darkness beautiful.
