Shokan 2020

Kan-no-iri/寒の入り 		  -  The 15th day from the Winter Solstice
(冬至 toji). The period between Shokan and
Setsubun(Feb.3) is called Kan-no-uchi
(寒の内), and it is the coldest period.
Today is the first day of the Kan 寒lit.cold),
so it is also called "Kan-no-iri"(The

Day of Rice Porridge with Seven Herbs
2025		 (January 7th/annual)
Nanakusa means seven herbs, and gayu (kayu) means rice porridge.
"Nanakusa-gayu"is rice porridge with seven edible wild herbs of spring:
Seri (Japanese parsley), Nazuna (shepherd'd purse), Gogyo (cotton weed), Hakobera (chick weed),
Hotokenoza (henbit), Suzuna (turnip) and Suzushiro (Japanese radish).
We eat "Nanakusagayu" on January 7th because of the seventh of the first month
has been an important festival called "Jinjitsu no sekku （人日の節句）" since Heian Period.
This seasonal festival was introduced from China, which had been held to ward off evil.
Now in Japan, we eat it in hopes of longevity and good health,
and it's also to supply green vegetables after the osechi food.

These are biennial plants. Japanese winters are brutal, but they stand the cold.

Seijin no hi
Coming of Age Day2025		 People who have reached 20 or who will reach the age of 20 before March 31
are invited to the Seijin-shiki ( Coming-of-age ceremony) held at the school district of their residence
or home town on Seijin-no-Hi. Most of the women dress in furisode (long sleeve kimono) and men wear suits.
Coming-of-Age Day celebretion was a good chance to have a consciousness of being an adult
who has a duty and resposibility. Now it's a kind of event to meet old friends.
When you reach 20 years old, you have the right to vote, and can drink alcohl.

Kenkoku Kinen no Hi
National Foundation day
2025		 (Feb. 11/annual)
Day for commemorating the foundation of the nation and for fostering patriotic feelings.

Kenkoku Kinen no Hi (建国記念の日)was called "Kigensetsu(紀元節)" before.
According to the Japanese historical legend, the Emperor Jinmu, the first Emperor of Japan,
ascended the throne on this day in the year 660BC. It was designated as Japan's Foundation Day
and became holiday by the Meiji Government in 1872.
The holiday was abolished after the World War II by the view of the occupation forces,
but was revived in 1966 as "Kenkoku Kinen no Hi/ The Memorial Day of the National Foundation", and executed from1967.
So this day is not a historical foundation day. Just the day to celebrate the fact that the nation was established.

This event was originally observed in the
purification custom in the Heian period
which the impurity and illness of human is
transferred onto katashiro/image of human
or
doll made of paper, wood, grass, leaves or
straw placed in small boats(straw basket)
and then float down a river into the sea
on the night of March 3. It is the origin of
the Doll's festival held on March 3.
